Motorola Solutions Closes $1.5B Acquisition of D-Fend Solutions
Motorola Solutions finalized its $1.5 billion purchase of counter-drone firm D-Fend Solutions, expanding its public safety tech portfolio.
Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) on Monday announced the completed acquisition of counter-drone technology company D-Fend Solutions for $1.5 billion, adding advanced counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) capabilities to its mission-critical public safety ecosystem. The Chicago-based tech giant said the deal gives law enforcement agencies and enterprise clients access to cutting-edge tools designed to safely neutralize unauthorized drone threats.
Chairman and CEO Greg Brown framed the deal as a logical extension of Motorola's ground-level safety mandate. "Safety on the ground requires safety in the sky," Brown said, emphasizing that D-Fend's field-proven technology offers customers unique airspace protection that complements the company's broader portfolio of mission-critical solutions.

What sets D-Fend apart from conventional counter-drone vendors is its RF cyber takeover technology. Rather than relying on signal jamming or physical interception methods — approaches that carry collateral risks — D-Fend's platform identifies a rogue drone, seizes precise control of it, and redirects it safely to a designated area. That surgical approach reduces the danger of crashing drones in populated zones, a significant advantage for urban public safety deployments.
The acquisition positions Motorola Solutions to compete more aggressively in the rapidly expanding airspace security market, where unauthorized drones have become a growing threat to critical infrastructure, stadiums, correctional facilities, and government sites worldwide. By integrating D-Fend's capabilities into its existing ecosystem, Motorola can offer customers an end-to-end solution spanning ground communications, video intelligence, and now aerial threat management.
