Rocket Lab to Buy Iridium in Deal to Build Space Giant
Rocket Lab has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Iridium, combining launch capability with global satellite services.
Rocket Lab announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Iridium, the global satellite communications provider known for its voice, data, and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services, in what the company is calling a historic deal designed to create a fully vertically integrated space enterprise.
The acquisition marks a significant strategic pivot for Rocket Lab, which has built its reputation as a small-satellite launch provider. By absorbing Iridium's established constellation and global customer base, Rocket Lab would move well beyond its launch-services roots and into the business of operating and monetizing a live satellite network that spans the entire planet.

Iridium operates one of the few truly global satellite networks, offering connectivity and location services in regions where ground-based infrastructure cannot reach — including the poles and open oceans. Folding that operational capability into Rocket Lab's existing manufacturing and launch assets could give the combined company an end-to-end competitive position that few rivals can match.
The deal signals growing consolidation pressure across the commercial space industry, where investors and executives increasingly believe that companies controlling the full stack — from rocket to orbit to end-user service — will hold decisive long-term advantages over pure-play launch or pure-play satellite operators.
