Stellantis Bets on Robotaxis and Solid-State Batteries for EV Edge
Stellantis is partnering with Wayve and Uber for Level 4 robotaxi deployment while road-testing solid-state battery tech in a Dodge Charger Daytona prototype.
Stellantis is making two high-stakes technological moves simultaneously, partnering with autonomous driving firm Wayve and ride-hailing giant Uber to pursue Level 4 robotaxi deployment while conducting real-world road tests of solid-state battery technology inside a Dodge Charger Daytona prototype — signaling a sweeping push to redefine its competitive standing in electric and autonomous mobility.
The solid-state battery testing uses Factorial's FEST technology, a development that could prove pivotal for the automaker's electrification ambitions. Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as a potential leap beyond conventional lithium-ion cells, promising greater energy density and improved safety, though commercial-scale production remains a formidable engineering challenge across the industry.

On the autonomy front, the Wayve and Uber partnership targets Level 4 self-driving capability — a threshold at which a vehicle can handle all driving tasks within defined conditions without human intervention. Reaching that bar at scale would place Stellantis alongside a small group of automakers and tech companies competing for what could become a lucrative robotaxi market in North American and European cities.
Analysts will be watching whether Stellantis can translate these headline-grabbing pilot programs into scalable, profitable platforms. The company faces meaningful margin pressures in its core business, meaning the financial runway for sustained investment in these emerging technologies is not unlimited. Converting prototype demonstrations into mass-market products will ultimately determine whether these initiatives reshape Stellantis's long-term investment narrative or remain costly experiments.
